If Trevor Immelman really wants to model his career after his boyhood idol Gary Player, he needs to win this week, and again next week in Charlotte. That’s what Player did after he won his the 1978 Masters, only unlike Immelman, Player did it without a day off.

Just seven days after shooting a course-record 64 to win his third green jacket, Player shot a 67 at La Costa Country Club in Carlsbad, Calif., to win the Tournament of Champions by two shots over Andy North. And one week after that, Player shot 64-67-70-69 to win the Houston Open by a shot over Andy Bean. It was the last time a player won three events in a row starting with the Masters.

Bernhard Langer won in Hilton Head the week after his 1985 Masters win, but even that has become a rarity. In recent years, Masters winners have waved to the crowds and basked in the green afterglow of the new jacket.

Zach Johnson finished 6th last year at the Verizon Heritage, but didn’t hit a single golf ball between Sunday at Augusta and his Wednesday pro-am on Hilton Head. “It’s a whirlwind, a bit chaotic at times,” Johnson said at the time. “I was walking over here saying, gosh, I’ve got to play golf today.”

In 1998 Mark O’Meara told me that, “Until you go through that experience, you can’t imagine how great, but how wild and time-consuming it is. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t change it for anything, but, yeah, it’s a little tough to get in the mindset of playing a golf tournament.”

Immelman took a week off, so he’s had a little more time to decompress. Still, history isn’t with him. The only thing going for him is a golf swing that just won a major.
