For the past 13 weeks, parity has crept into the world of college football like never before. Appalachian State goes to Ann Arbor and beats Michigan, Navy breaks a 43-game losing streak to Notre Dame at the Irish’s home field, and 41-point underdog Stanford knocked off Pete Carroll’s USC team with a freshman quarterback making his first-ever start in the L.A. Colisseum snapping the Trojans’ 35-game home winning streak.

While those are implausible outcomes, when the college basketball season begins in earnest Friday night, the so-called “Mid-Majors” will be laying in the weeds hoping to pounce on one of the unsuspecting squads from the power conferences (ACC, Big East, SEC, Pac 10, Big Ten, etc.). While upsets have become the norm in NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament play, during the regular season and in made-for-television tournaments and pre-conference games almost always played in the Big-Boy’s home arenas, pulling an upset isn’t easy for the mid-major teams venturing to places like Syracuse, Tuscaloosa, Memphis, Gainesville or Morgantown.

However, there are some excellent Southeast-based mid-major teams who return a number of holdovers from last year’s squads that could make life difficult for teams from the power conferences during the 2007-08 season. We’ve compiled a list of games where upsets — why not likely — could happen if the major conference teams aren’t focused from the opening tip-off.

Those games listed in "red" below, comprise our list of possible upsets. Remember, you saw them here first.

Memphis Tigers Schedule

University of Memphis head coach John Calipari won’t be accused of ducking opponents with his No. 3-ranked Tigers this season. It’s not that Memphis didn’t play quality non-conference opposition last season, it was just the fact that C-USA opponents couldn’t compare to Calipari’s veteran squad as the Tigers ripped through the conference schedule and C-USA tournament undefeated in 2006-07.

That’s unlikely to change this year as the Tigers have reloaded their roster with standout freshman Derrick Rose of Chicago (17 points, six rebounds and five assists in his debut against Tennessee-Martin) and Iowa State transfer Shawn Taggart (15 rebounds in his first game).

The Tigers home schedule includes games against experienced mid-major programs Austin Peay and Gonzaga but also features match-ups against Georgetown, Arizona and Tennessee. Memphis faces USC at Madison Square Garden Dec. 4 and plays at Cincinnati Dec. 19.

Jamie: Obviously, Gardner Webb's upset of Hen-tucky fits well within what you are talking about above. I'll keep an eye on the outcomes of the above games.

Thanks.

UNC Greensboro beats Georgia Tech at home and Belmont beats Cincinnati in Cincinnati on Friday night. The heck with March Madness, lets call it the November Nightmare for the power conferences.

By now, Davidson's young squad is used to playing in hostile environments against highly ranked opponents so that shouldn't affect their play Wednesday when they play UNC in Charlotte at the Bobcats Arena.

They began last season by playing Michigan in Ann Arbor. SoCon Rookie of the Year Stephen Curry scored 32 points in the loss but the Wildcats were only down by five points late in the game. Later in the season they faced Duke at Cameron Indoor, a notoriously intimidating venue. Duke exposed Davidson's youth, keeping Curry to five points and crushing the Wildcats by 30. "We got flustered," admitted Curry following the game.

Tonight is the first (of many) nationally televised Duke basketball games. Watch for Duke's fresh faces in the front court: Kyle Singer, Taylor King, and Nolan Smith. Against North Carolina Central, this trio combined for 51 points in their first game together.

No upsets tonight. Duke defeated New Mexico State 86-61. The young trio was relatively quiet tonight adding 19 points to the effort. The Blue Devils appear better than last year but are possibly over ranked at No. 10 in the polls. We probably won't know until December if this is true.

Comparing Garner Webb's upset of Kentucky in basketball to App. State's early season victory over Michigan in football is insufficient. App. State won the subdivision championship last year. Garner Webb isn't even the best team in the small-major Atlantic Sun conference. But we'll still keep an eye on the Runnin' Bulldogs this season, who will likely be 4-0 going into Thursday's game against UConn.

I'm happy to see you didn't put Gardner Webb upseting my Wildcats in Lexington last Wednesday. What a welcoming committee that would be...To be honest with you, I was more concerned about my upcoming birthday than practicing w/ the team. Too bad I was out until nearly 3am the night before the game with some random UK co-ed from Corbin, Kentucky.

In the here and now, I suppose I can be thankful that the LPD has provided me with a limo service so I don't rack up anymore DUIs. Other than that, I just hope we can scrape by the next few games until UNC.
