Upset/Blowout Game of the Week: Auburn vs. Florida, 8 p.m., ESPN.
Last year I had the same feeling about Florida. The Gators were ranked No. 2 in the country coming into the game against Auburn and had amassed confident victories over two highly ranked SEC opponents LSU and Tennessee. They also had narrowly defeated a soft Alabama team at home. Still, I was pretty confident the Gators would comfortably handle then No. 14-ranked Auburn. The result: Auburn upset Florida, 27-17.
This year I feel the same way about Florida except with Auburn’s performance thus far, it’s easy to see this game as either an Auburn upset or a Florida blowout.
Why there is potential for a blowout:
1. Florida has won the last 18 meetings between the two teams in the Swamp. Auburn’s last win in the Swamp came in 1994 when the Tigers upset No. 1-ranked Florida, 36-33.
2. Florida’s offense is averaging an astounding 49 points per game and more than 500 yards of total offense.
3. UF has a 27-0 point advantage over SEC teams in the 4th quarter this year.
4. Auburn is ranked last in the SEC in third down conversations. Florida is first in the SEC.
Why there is potential for an upset:
1. Last week Florida defeated Ole Miss, the last place team in the SEC West, by only a touchdown.
2. There isn’t a school in the SEC that has fewer than Florida's 28 combined juniors and seniors returning to the team. Freshmen and sophomores make up 73 percent of the roster. No player in the Florida secondary began the season having started a single collegiate game.
3. Each of the last three meetings have been decided in the final minutes, with Auburn winning two out of three.
4. Auburn’s Brandon Cox has the most wins of any starting quarterback in the SEC.
Why some Auburn fans believe they’ll upset Florida:
1. Auburn has won its last 12 games when wearing all white uniforms dating back to the 2004 season. They’ll wear white this Saturday.
