It’s the biggest game for Boston College in a half century, but does anybody in Beantown really care?

A win by the second-ranked and undefeated Eagles on Thursday night at No. 8 Virginia Tech, coupled by a loss by Ohio State this weekend against Joe Paterno’s crew in Happy Valley, would propel B.C. to the top of the polls. But with the Red Sox in the World Series, there appears to be little interest from the Chowder Heads.

Maybe that’s why first-year B.C. coach Jeff Jagodzinski was a bit touchy on the weekly ACC teleconference Wednesday. Jagodzinski took offense to a question asked about playing a night game in Lane Stadium, a rough road venue for most. Why, don’t they have lights, asked Jagodzinski? Hopefully his senior-dominated team, the one left behind by Tom O’Brien, won’t be as tight for the big game as their coach appeared to be.

The bottom line is the Hokies are used to these big games, the Eagles not so much. Will that mean anything when Heisman hopeful Matt Ryan steps under center? Probably not.

So, let’s look at the facts.

Boston College has the nation’s top-ranked rush defense, while the Hokies haven’t been able to free up Branden Ore for many big-time gains this season. B.C. hasn’t allowed more than 69 yards rushing in any game, but has allowed more than 350 yards passing in three games.

The Eagles have also been opportunistic, ranking second in the nation in turnover margin. That’s usually Virginia Tech’s forte.

All the stats point to the Eagles, but I can’t convince myself a schedule that has included Army, UMass, Bowling Green and Notre Dame the last few weeks has prepared B.C. for this big game.

And the Hokies have started scoring more, getting 41 at Clemson and 43 at Duke during a recent five-game winning streak.

Who starts at QB for Virginia Tech may matter. If Tyrod Taylor is healthy enough to make a go of it, he adds another running dimension the Eagles must contend with.

I picked the Hokies to win the ACC title this season so I’m sticking with my initial forecast. Just like I picked the Red Sox back in April to take it all.

Final score: Virginia Tech 16, Boston College 13.
