In the Sept./Oct. issue, my article on the best college quarterbacks since 1958 has caused a bit of an uproar with some fans who think I got it all wrong.

Sifting through a list of potential candidates in order for SportsUnlimited to name the top 10 at arguably the most important position on the field was a larger chore than first anticipated. Of course, stats played a major part in the subjective ranking, but intangibles were also heavily factored into the equation, such as a player’s affect on the sport, how he influenced his college program, play in big games, national titles, etc.

Here is my Top 10!

1) Peyton Manning (Tennessee) 1994-97

2) Roger Staubach (Navy) 1962-64

3) Terry Bradshaw (Louisiana Tech) 1966-69

4) Charlie Ward (Florida State) 1989-93

5) Joe Namath (Alabama) 1962-64

6) Vinny Testaverde (Miami) 1982-86

7) Brett Favre (Southern Miss) 1987-90

8) Steve McNair (Alcorn State) 1991-94

9) Archie Manning (Mississippi) 1968-70

10) Phillip Rivers (N.C. State) 2000-03

I want to know how you'd rank my selections or who you think should have made my list?

I was surprised UGA's David Greene didn't receive an honorable mention, or any mention! (Despite his current status on the practice squad of the New England Patriots...) Greene finished his college career as the winning-est quarterback in NCAA Division I history with 42 wins in four years, eclipsing the recor eviously held by Peyton Manning. Remember, he threw the winning touchdown pass as a redshirt freshman in 2001 to beat TENN in the famous "Hobnail Boot" play!

Insert at #4 ranking: Danny Wuerffel (Florida) 1993-96 – Yeah, I know, anybody could put up big numbers with Steve Spurrier calling plays! The difference is that Wuerffel ran that system like no one before or after he’d arrived at UF. Plus, he has the national championship and the Heisman hardware to separate him from other quarterbacks that have piled up insane career stats. (Manning never beat Florida or won a national championship in his career!) I put Wuerffell ahead of PManning and Ward, behind AManning, Bradshaw and #1 Stauback - a born leader and nifty scrambler who carried an average Navy team into the '63 Cotton Bowl!

Alpha Dawg: Good point. As you can tell, there was a ton of guys to pick from. Probably some of the recent guys didn't get their due because of the pass-happy attacks in college football these days. You know, everybody throws for 3,000 yards now.
R.C. -- You're letting your true colors show. How can we replace QBs with the talents of a Manning or Ward with Wuerffel? I know being a Gator you hate Manning and you can't stomach an FSU quy making the list. Picking one Spurrier's guys was not far from my top 10, believe me, but if any Florida QB made the grade it would have been Steve Superior himself!
