A milestone of sorts was reached this week when the 10th issue of SportsUnlimited was mailed throughout the Southeast with a striking pose of Tiger Woods on the cover.
Man, how time flies when you’re having fun.

As Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg puts it, his young Hokies have had some cleansing moments this season. Like back-to-back losses in mid February when they were outrebounded by 15 at home to Miami, followed up by a 92-53 humiliation in Chapel Hill when the opposing board domination reached 30.
A four-game winning streak near the end of the regular season and a turnaround on the glass wiped away some of the late frustration and put Virginia Tech squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble at 18-12.
Then came Friday and the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament, playing in front of former Hokie great Dell Curry, who sat close enough to Greenberg to whisper plays into his ear, and against a Miami club that itself had put together a decent postseason calling card.

After covering sports for close to 30 years, I often think I’ve seen it all. Then something strange, bizarre or out-of-left field comes along and I shake my head like the rest of you. One moment like this occurred a month ago when the Carolina Hurricanes surrendered two short-handed goals – on the same shift – and three overall in a period. Never seen that one before -- and probably won’t ever again.

Why did I feel obligated to remember the name of some Polish guy from Chicago? Well, even in the mid 1980s, it was a name I believed I’d be using over and over and over again. And I was correct – in my assessment and spelling.

The Hurricanes won the Southeast, when it was a four-team division, in 1999 with just 86 points. Since then, the division-winning point totals have been 102, 96, 91, 93, 106, 112 and 97.

Each year, many NHL teams try to acquire/unload players prior to the league mandated trade deadline. This year, as we get closer to the Feb. 26 at 3 p.m. mark, several Southeast teams could be in the market buying or selling depending upon their status in the standings. Today, all are desperate to improve but that could change in the coming weeks.
