Game-of-the-Day: Georgia at Alabama

With respect to the two unbeatens tangling in Baton Rouge, and the shoot-out at the No-D Corral in Fayetteville, the match-up between Nick Saban's 3-0 Alabama team and Mark Richt's 2-1 Georgia Bulldogs in Tuscaloosa could be the game of the day.

Georgia hasn't started any SEC season with two losses since 1993 when Ray Goff coached the Bulldogs. In fact, Mark Richt is 5-0 in his five SEC road openers since his arrival in 2001, and in SEC road games — not including Florida — Richt's Bulldogs have won 18 of 21 and his teams are 2-0 against Alabama.Alabama, now 2-0 in SEC play having dispatched Vandy and Arkansas on successive weekends, did start the SEC season 3-0 under Mike Shula in 2005, for Mike Dubose in 1999, for Gene Stallings in 1992, 1993, 1994, 1996 and with Bill Curry at the helm in 1989, and for Ray Perkins in 1986. Of course, Coach Bryant's teams did that with regularity. At LSU, Saban's 2002 team started the season with a 3-0 record, which was the only time that happened in his five years in Baton Rouge. His National Championship team was 2-0 in SEC play before losing to Florida, their lone loss that season.

Listening to coach-speak this week really hasn't provided many clues either.

"I think our guys are getting excited for another SEC opponent," Richt said. "I think hearing that the ESPN Gameday crew will be there got them excited also, knowing that the whole country will be focused on our game. Also for us to have an early game last Saturday and then be able to go home and watch what happened in the Alabama-Arkansas game really got our guys excited about the great challenge that lies ahead of us."

Not missing a beat, Saban called the Bulldogs an outstanding team. "Mark Richt has done a fantastic job there in his tenure there of being consistently good, each and every year, game to game. They do a great job of executing on offense. They have a fine, young quarterback. They have good skill players and runners. Their defense is physical and fast. They are probably the fastest team and have more team speed than anybody we have played against so far. We want to try to get it right; it will take one of our best performances to play against an outstanding Georgia team here this week.”

Alabama exits a huge confidence-building win that saw the Crimson Tide blow two 21-point leads but came back to beat Arkansas in the final seconds. Georgia exits a game in which Richt was able to play three quarterbacks and a ton of people on both sides of the ball against Western Carolina. I'm not sure if Alabama is capabe of winning three straight SEC games just yet, and I'm not certain Georgia is ready to win a close SEC battle on the road. There was no way to expect the beating the Dawgs laid on Auburn last year at Jordan-Hare either, but the Crimson Tide seems to have regained the confidence it sorely lacked in 2006. I'll say that 'Bama hangs on and wins another close one by a field goal or less.

Florida at Ole Miss

The last time the Gators ventured to Oxford in 2002, the Gators coached by Ron Zook lost to Eli Manning and the Rebels 17-14. In fact, Florida is 0-3 in its last three trips to the Magnolia State losing twice at Starkville. Ole Miss beat the Gators at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in 2003 as well. That oddity is just about the only thing Ole Miss has going for them, unless you want to add that this is youthful Florida's first road game of the season. Ah, but Ole Miss has given up yards and points in bushels so far in 2007, and the Gators' offense is lethal. This game might be a little closer than most people think, but the Gators should hand the Rebels their third loss in a row.

South Carolina at LSU

There's not much history in this match-up and LSU beat the Gamecocks two times when Saban piloted the Tigers in 2002 and 2003. LSU looks nearly invincible averaging 45.6 points per game and allowing just seven points in its first three contests. Wide receiver Early Doucet is hobbled with a strained groin, but LSU likely won't miss a beat if he can't go. On the other side of the ball, LSU has allowed an average of 131 yards per game and Spurrier's offense turned the ball over six times against S.C. State at home last weekend. That's hardly a cause for optimism for the Gamecocks.

On playing in front of a loud, hostile Tiger Stadium crowd, USC coach Steve Spurrier issued a backhanded compliment to his starting QB.

"It will be a very loud atmosphere, same as at Georgia, same as at Tennessee and same as at Florida. That really hasn't bothered our guys. In fact, after our game last week I said we're better in the loud ballparks because our quarterback can't audible. We had some bad audibles last week, went back and got sacked and fumbled."

On why his Gamecocks play well on the road, Spurrier said, "I don't have the answer for it, but somehow that appears to be the case for some of our guys. Not all of them. We have some guys that play really well and hard here at home. Some of our other guys seem a little nervous or uptight playing here at home. I don't have the answer for that, but as coaches we just need to keep coaching and get our guys relaxed to play the game. Sometimes we just have some players that don't look confident and don't act like they enjoy playing football. That's what we're working on - putting players on the field that act like they want to play."

That might mean something against some opponents, but it's not likely to matter in Baton Rouge.

Kentucky at Arkansas

Coming off a huge win for UK, the question is can the Wildcats re-focus quickly after beating in-state rival Louisville at home (the Cat's first win against a Top-10 opponent in 30 years). Even if we allow for that possibility, the Cats' have to find a way to slow down Arkansas' potent rushing attack that gained more than 300 yards at Alabama last week.

Can the Hogs rebound from the tough loss in Tuscaloosa last weekend? Since Nutt's first season in 1998, Arkansas has an unenviable 15-21 record coming off a loss. On the other hand, UK is just 2-14 in SEC road games since Rich Brooks came to town, but the Cats are 8-1 in their last nine games overall and the Hogs have lost four of their last five. Expect another shoot-out reminiscent of the last time these two schools met in 2003, the 7OT contest that finished with the Hogs winning 71-63.

An odd statistic shows that Kentucky has won its last two games despite allowing 300 yards rushing. The Cats beat UL-Monroe last season and Kent State in the second week this year despite yielding 300-plus yards on the ground.

This time, the first team to 60 points might win it. A vote for recent success means the Wildcats win this one!

The South will rise again! South Carolina that is! No just kidding.......probably going to be an LSU Blowout. Expect lots of visor tosses from Coach Spurrier, who soundly thrashed the Tigers many times while at UF. Probably won't matter, but USC not allowed a TD in 10 quarters of football.

Georgia is 1-7 all-time in Tuscaloosa, but could turnaround their season with an upset of the Tide. I'm hoping for a breakout game by the UGA offense (finally!) led by QB Matthew Stafford, WR Demiko Goodman and freshman RB Knowshon Moreno.

Prophet: I'll bet they allow one in the 11th quarter!

Pigskin: I think Stafford is the best young QB in the league, but I look for Richt to try to run the ball a lot tomorrow night and Moreno could have a big game.

28- 16. GEAUX TIGERS! Give Spurrier credit for staying close until fake field goal. That was one of the most entertaining plays I've ever seen - LSU sure put one over on the Ol' Ball Coach. Not to mention 290 yards rushing!

GO DAwgs! UGA's Matthew Stafford and Mikey Henderson sure crashed Saban's party. Give the Tide credit for their rally, but that was a great 1st down call in OT and a GREAT road win for Richt and the Bulldogs! Winning the toss and going on D first in OT sure is an advantage... especially when you can execute like that when you get the ball.

I had the pleasure of attending the Georgia-Alabama game last night, and was impressed with Georgia's gameplan, which featured short passes where Dawgs' receivers were open all night. If not for Stafford's two interceptions and a few drops by tight end Chandler, the Tide wouldn't have been in the game. You have to respect the no-quit attitude demonstrated by the Tide, but UGA deserved to win the game.

LSU did pull a fast one on the Ol' Ball Coach and now everything sets up beautifully for the LSU-Florida match-up Oct. 6 in Baton Rouge. I'll be down there for that one, too.

What? No pats on the back for my UK pick over Arkansas? The Ole Miss to keep it closer than people thought?

More tomorrow. Have a great Sunday.

Carl, here you go ... I thought Arkansas was a lock to cover the -7, but Andre Woodson and Kentucky made their rally from being down 29-21 in the 4th quarter to win 42-29 look easy compared to last week's last minute heroics vs Louisville. (Is Woodson emerging as a Heisman Trophy contender?) Arkansas dominated the first half but only led 20-14 thanks to the big fumble return by KY.

I wore out the remote flipping between that 4th Quarter comeback; the first half of UGA/AL, an entertaining Cal vs AZ game, also the Texas vs Rice track meet. Previously I watched Mich and Penn State slug it out and MSU leave the Irish 0-4. Then I was up late to watch my Bruins outlast Washington (after being outscored 37-6 in the 2nd half vs Utah last week, ouch!) ... another great day of college football!

BruinFan: There are going to be a ton of great Saturdays this year. I do believe that if UK continues to have success that Woodson will indeed become a bonafide Hesiman contender. I am sure he's not going to complete the season without an interception, but he has the skilled guys around him to put up some big numbers throughout the year. If he is able to have decent or better days against USC, LSU and Florida, then I look for the hype machine to go crazy for him. Winning two of those three would help him immeasurably.

Cats should be 5-0 entering a Thursday night match-up at USC, and he'll get plenty of attention that night with Spurrier on the other sideline.
